Who is ALICE?

Shining a Light on a Hidden population: Meet ALICE

ALICE represents the men and women of all ages and races who get up each day to go to work like you and me, but who aren’t sure if they’ll be able to put dinner on the table each night. They are our child care workers, our mechanics, our home health aides, store clerks and office assistants – all workers we cannot live without. Enter ALICE: An acronym that stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

ALICE, the brainchild of United Way of Northern New Jersey, is a framework that puts a compelling face on community need. Through a commissioned research project with Rutgers University, United Way will produce a report that provides the most comprehensive depiction to-date of financial needs across Volusia and Flagler Counties. We’ve all heard anecdotally how our social service systems have come under increased strain in recent years. The United Way ALICE Report provides the detailed analysis and data that explains why so many are struggling. This report will ultimately guide a United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties in its goal of advancing the common good in our community.

ALICE is a real and significant part of our community; when we ignore ALICE, we risk the future well-being of our communities.

Before this report, ALICE was a population and community issue without a name or face. While it is true that ALICE has existed long before this study, it was not until the release of this study that there was any way to discuss the plight of these households, nonetheless quantify them.

Intuitively, we have long-known that there is significantly greater need than the typical portrait painted of Florida. But, intuition is not enough. United Way believes in a research-based model in order to identify and best respond to the needs of our communities. Through the statistics gathered, we will be able to identify the needs most pressing: child care, food, housing, financial stability, etc. We want to understand the causes of the problems, so that we can have greater impact. We aim to provide objective, comprehensive data that can be used for serious policy planning in every arena.

United Way alone cannot change community conditions for ALICE. That is why we will be using this data to engage corporations, faith-based organizations, government entities, and concerned citizens in a dialogue about how to help change the course for ALICE.

Volusia and Flagler Counties’ ALICE Report will be released later this year. We hope you share our concern for this growing segment and how their everyday struggles reach beyond personal trials to impact the wider community. We all have a vested interest in improving conditions for ALICE. And, we all have a part to play in the solution. Please join us in raising awareness about ALICE and stimulating a fresh dialogue among community leaders about how, together, we can provide ALICE an opportunity to succeed

Be on the lookout in the coming months for more information on ALICE!
