Palm Coast, FL – The United Way Women’s Initiative of Flagler (WIF) held its 6th Annual Power of the Purse Dinner and Silent Auction on Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Hammock Dunes Club. Around 170 attended the sold out event where more than $18,525 were raised to help women and children in Flagler County.
The event’s silent auction had more than 70 donated baskets/packages and featured everything from designer purses to Caribbean vacations and an African Safari. Keynote speaker, Heather Beaven shared her inspirational stories of successful women and of her amazing life in and out of the Navy. Additional speakers from WIF grant recipients from Family Life Center (Trish Giaccone) and Grace Community Food Pantry (Pastor Silano) shared how the grants from WIF are being used to change lives. Guests also enjoyed entertainment by pianist Jimmy Mason.
Jamie Brown, Director of Marketing for The Daytona Beach News-Journal and Women’s Initiative of Flagler President was named “Woman of the Year” for her commitment to the community through giving, advocating and volunteering. “Jamie’s a high-spirited, fully engaged leader,” said Ray Salazar, president of United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. “She approaches every task with high energy and makes sure everyone’s having fun while they get community work done. Collecting 60,000 pounds of food (during the Flagler group’s recent food drive) is no easy task.”
The mission of the Women’s Initiative of Flagler County is to create positive, measurable, long term change in the lives of women and children of Flagler County by focusing on root causes and pooling resources to increase our impact.
